Technician

POSITION DESCRIPTION

This individual will ultimately enjoy a well-rounded knowledge of HVAC systems, HVAC system controls, and HVAC design and applications.  The TAB Technician is expected to become familiar with basic heating, ventilating and air conditioning design principles and must also be knowledgeable in instrumentation, system control and control sequences.

Systems Management & Balancing, Inc.’s workload consists of commercial and industrial projects in Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois, and South Dakota.  Since all test work is conducted on site, the work site will change regularly providing diversity in systems and geography; the technician is exposed to varying amounts of travel.  Job sites are generally within 150 miles of Des Moines.

 Basic job functions include:

Prepare HVAC TAB layouts utilizing design documents and equipment submittal data for field use.

  • Perform field work utilizing special instrumentation to measure and adjust air and water flow rates for HVAC equipment and systems (air & water balance).

  • Work with design engineers regarding issues and solutions.

  • Prepare data for reports of final test results.

Installation of equipment, piping and/or ductwork is NOT a job function of the TAB Technician.  Refrigeration testing is NOT a function of the TAB Technician.

 POSITION REQUIREMENTS

The TAB Technician must have a sense of independence and be a self-starter with the ability to identify what must be accomplished and efficiently be able to manage their time without constant supervision.  Technicians typically work a project alone.

 Required skill sets are as follows:

  • Ethical, honest and trustworthy (This is the foundation of our business)

  • Good communication skills

  • Excellent math skills (through algebra)

  • Hands on skills with hand tools (work of a ladder)

  • Neat and organized with paperwork including good/neat handwriting

  • Computer skills to work with HVAC DDC control systems and proficient with Microsoft Office products

 The actual testing work does entail physical activity and is well suited for any individual interested in staying in shape.  The TAB technician must be able to work off a ladder. The TAB Technician is expected to communicate professionally and tactfully with contractors, engineers, owners and management when addressing issues or providing technical information.
